2023 annual meeting recap

The 2023 annual meeting of the Arizona Recycling Coalition (AzRC) was was held on Thursday, Febraury 16 at Metro Tech High School. With members in attendance from across the state, we were thrilled to announce this year’s grant recipients, scholarship winners, and award winners.

Before the awards showcase, AzRC welcomed Jennie Patel from the Arizona Super Bowl Host Committee. Patel led the sustainability efforts for Super Bowl LVII and shared the committee’s successful efforts to divert 92.6% of downtown event waste, making this year’s Super Bowl a zero-waste event and the greenest in history.

Awards

The AzRC presented a variety of awards during our annual meeting. These awards include the following:

  • Grant

    • $5,000 to the City of Tuscon (for their compost pilot program)

  • Scholarships

    • $2,500 to Kaysey England, pursuing a Master’s in Sustainable Food Systems at ASU

    • $2,500 to Catherine Klein, pursuing a Bachelor’s in Sustainability with a Minor in Business at ASU

  • Excellence in Recycling awards

    • Municipality — Town of Queen Creek (initiatives to put recycling at sustainability at the forefront of their municipality)

    • School — Garfield Elementary (a comprehensive approach to zero waste lifestyle and sustainable food systems as well as a curriculum built on sustainable principles)

    • Small Business — The Churchill (gathering space made from a shipping container, Platinum Certified Green Business)

    • Large Business — Footprint (inventing and manufacturing solutions that replace short-term use plastic)

    • Non-profit — Spaces of Opportunity (transformed 19 acres of South Phoenix into thriving green space with incubator farms, community farming spaces, farmer’s markets, and healing gardens)

    • Special Recognition — Cindy Moss, Keep Phoenix Beautiful

    • Special Recognition — Tom Waldeck, Keep Phoenix Beautiful

  • Lifetime Achievement

    • Clark Landrum II, WM

    • Todd Blair, City of Glendale

Congratulations to all of our award recipients, and a special thank you to the organizations, members, and donors who make them possible.

Board election and appointments

Each year at the close of our annual meeting, we thank board members whose terms expire and elect new board members to serve one- or two- year terms. We express our sincere appreciation for the service of Todd Blair, Dr. Erin Murphy and Jessica Yates, who have completed their terms on the AzRC board.

At our annual meeting, two board members were reelected:

  • Karen Jayne, Stardust Building Supplies

  • Terry Gellenbeck, Keep Phoenix Beautiful

Additionally, one new board member was elected:

  • Ryan Gurr, Town of Queen Creek

In the weeks following our annual meeting, the board appointed three additional members to serve through next year’s annual meeting:

  • Beth Forsberg, Goodwill of Arizona

  • Tyler Eglen, Arizona State University

  • Ryley Buchanan, Town of Queen Creek
